The accident

Posted by admin on Monday May 28, 2007 Under Saab 96 V4 L Super 1977

Damn! I just got the B105 running again and had an accident only a couple of days later.

Well, just a little “fender bender” but totally my own fault.

Actually it was quite a “lucky” accident in the sense that, even though I rammed my friends 1975 Saab 95, the damage to the 95 was very minor. It only suffered some paint loss to the trailer hitch. Thank the gods for that, I really don’t want to think that the damage could have been much worse and very difficult to repair fully…

Eventually I offered a bottle of nice vintage whiskey with a very sincere apology for the damages and it was gracefully accepted.

Here’s a pic of my car:

I still need to paint a few bits and pieces, but other than that, it is now just the matter of putting it all back together.

I thought about changing the color scheme a bit, but ultimately decided to stick with yellow.

Timing gears and gearbox

Posted by admin on Tuesday Mar 27, 2007 Under Saab 96 V4 L Super 1977

Well, I have to get the “B105″ running again (shot timing gears and some gearbox trouble), so I started by removing the engine and gearbox. Also washed the engine bay.

I then removed replacement engine and gearbox from one of the 95′s. I took the engine apart to get the timing gears and installed them to the 96′s engine. (I couldn’t use the 95 engine as replacement since it has some glogged oil canals and doesn’t lift oil to the heads).

The timing gears were very good – now the engine is pretty silent, no rattling.

Here’s the gearbox:

I changed the gearbox oil and put it in the 96 and then the engine. On the test drive it turned out that the second gear makes an awful noise – shot bearings!

No other option than to remove the engine and gearbox again.

I then put back the original gearbox which whines quite a bit (that’s not too dangerous). And after that also the engine, again.

Now it runs as it should, except the transmission whine. I think it will  last at least for the summer while we rebuild the other gearbox.

Door trim repair

I have never done any upholstery stuff, so I started sort of small. I decided to fix the door panels that were a terrible mess. The original panel on the left, and the one I made on the right. Close enough.

The fabric part (imitation leather) was in pretty good shape, despite the panels themselves having rotted badly.

Test fitting the fabric. I decided to glue it in place.
